Identification: Unfortunately, termites are most often identified by the damage they cause to your home. They are typically a quarter to a half inch in length, pale-bodied, and some have wings. Winged termites are called swarmers. There are over 40 species of termites found in America. Homeowners are most likely to encounter swarmers, which tend to be larger and more easily identified.
Behavior & Diet: Wood is the main food source for termites, but they will eat other materials like plastic and drywall. Different species have their own preferences such as softwood, dry wood, decaying wood, etc. Some termites form homes underground in soil, while others live inside the wood they consume. Swarmers are more active in Spring and are attracted to light, so you may see them surrounding windows or doors.
